Thai Traditional herbal remedies have long been employed to relieve menstrual pain, reflecting ancestral wisdom that supports women’s well-being during menstruation. This quasi-experimental study utilized a two-group pretest-posttest design aimed to develop a herbal oil preparation for relieving primary dysmenorrhea using Thai traditional medicine techniques, examine its effectiveness, and evaluate user satisfaction among female adolescents. The sample consisted of 60 adolescent girls aged 15-25 years with dysmenorrhea, divided into an experimental group of 30 (Topical application of herbal oil to the abdominal area) and a control group of 30 (No herbal oil was applied to the abdominal area). Samples were selected using proportionate stratified random sampling according to academic programs. Data were collected from January to March using a questionnaire validated by three experts (IOC = 0.67–1.00), with a reliability coefficient of 0.793. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed with descriptive statistics, paired sample t-test, and independent t-test at a significance level of 0.05.
The findings revealed that herbal oil prepared through the roasting method using Zingiber cassumunar (Phlai), Curcuma longa (Turmeric), coconut oil, and borneol. The results showed that the mean pain score in the experimental group after the intervention (mean= 4.20, S.D. = 0.85) was significantly lower than before the intervention (mean= 5.93, S.D. = 0.91) (p ≤ 0.001). Comparison of post-intervention scores between the experimental and control groups also revealed significantly lower pain levels in the experimental group (mean= 4.20, S.D. = 0.85 vs. mean = 5.37, S.D. = 1.33, p ≤ 0.001). Participants reported high overall satisfaction with the herbal oil, especially regarding its convenience and ability to relieve localized pain. The findings indicate that Thai herbal oil is a promising alternative for reducing primary dysmenorrhea among female adolescents and support the continued application of Thai traditional wisdom in public health care.
