Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to examine the factors predicting recovery after colon resection surgery in cancer patients based on the concept of postoperative recovery outcome measurement and a review of the literature. Data were collected from the surgical care unit at Thammasat University Hospital from March to December 2016. One hundred and eleven cancer patients undergoing colon resection surgery were participated. The instruments were as the following; a demographic data questionnaire, a first oral feeding and ambulate record form, a nutritional status assessment form and a postoperative recovery assessment form. The content validity index and reliability coefficient of these scales were acceptable. Data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient, point biserial correlation, and multiple regressions.

The results revealed that gender, age, preoperative nutrition, types of surgery, operative time, the first period of oral feeding, ambulation and number of hospital day altogether predicted the postoperative recovery of cancer patients in 86.1% (R2 = .861, p < .001). This finding could be used in nursing plan to enhance the postoperative recovery after colon resection surgery among cancer patients by the promotion of preoperative nutrition and oral feeding initiation after operation and the result could be used for further research.
