Abstract

Objective         : To study the characteristics and causes of deathduring treatment of tuberculosis patients in Sawanpracharakhospital

Setting            : TB clinic Sawanpracharak Hospital

Design            : Descriptivestudy

Subjects          : All TB patients who died during treatmentfrom October 1,2016 to September 30,2018 , 98 patients

Methods          : To gather data from previous medical records andregistration of tuberculosis patients, consist of general information,history of illness,history of tuberculosis treatment,  side effects and complications from drug users, causes of death and the period of survival which compared by the differences between patients who died from tuberculosis directly with patients who died from other sicknesses.

Results           : During the study,Patients died 6.9 percent of new tuberculosis patients and 26.5 percent of them died fromtuberculosis directly,The average age of those who do not die from tuberculosis directlyare less than those who died from tuberculosis directly(54.0±16.4 years and 67.0±15.9 years;mean difference 13.0; 95%CI of mean difference 5.5-20.5; P < 0.001) and they also have more HIV infection (42.3%and 8.0% ; OR 0.12 ; 95%CI 0.03-0.54; P=0.002).There are no differencesofcomorbidities,nutritional status, sputum examinations, sites of infection, chest radiography,side effectsand complication in both groups.Patients who did not die from tuberculosis directly, most of them died from bacterial infection, HIV infection and malignancy.The duration of the survival for the two groups  were not different.

Conclusion         : The majority causes of death in TB patients are other diseases or conditions that occur during treatment such as bacterial infection, HIV infection and malignancy. The best practice oftuberculosis treatment should be included early diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseasesfor deadprevention
