Outcomes of Stroke Rehabilitation in Intermediate Care at Uthai Thani Hospital: A 5-Year Retrospective Study

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the functional outcomes of stroke rehabilitation in an intermediate care setting at Uthai Thani Hospital over a 5-year period.

Methods:  This retrospective study included 761 stroke patients who received inpatient rehabilitation between October 2019 and October 2024. Patient characteristics and clinical outcomes were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Changes in functional status were assessed using the Barthel Index at admission and discharge. Paired t-test was used to compare pre- and post-rehabilitation scores, and one-way ANOVA was used to compare outcomes among different baseline functional groups.

Results: Most patients were male (59.1%) with a mean age of 65.6 years. The Barthel Index scores significantly improved after rehabilitation compared with baseline (p-value <0.01). The mean functional gain was 2.5 points (95% CI: 2.3–2.7). Rehabilitation effectiveness was 20.3%, and rehabilitation efficiency was 0.3. Patients with moderate baseline functional status demonstrated greater improvement compared with other groups.

Conclusions: Intermediate care rehabilitation significantly improves functional outcomes in stroke patients, particularly in those with moderate baseline disability. These findings support the role of intermediate care in enhancing.
