Health Promotion Behavior of the Elderly in Bannakarteb, Thamuang Sub–district, Selaphum District, Roi Et Province

Abstract

         The purpose of this descriptive research was to study the health promotion behavior of the elderly in Bannakateb, Thamuang sub–district, selaphum district, Roi Et province. The research framework was based on Pender’s health promotion model. Simple random sampling by lottery consisted of 122 elderly people aged 60 years and above in Bannakateb, Thamuang sub–district, Selaphum district, Roi Et province. The research instruments were personal information interview and health promoting behaviors of the elderly interview. The reliability of instrument assessed by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.92. Data were analyzed using computer software to calculate the frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation.

         The results revealed that most participants had the very high level of health promotion behavior ( x ̅ = 3.41, S.D. = 0.70). When considered each aspect, the very high level of health promotion behavior sorted from high to low average scores were nutrition aspect ( = 3.58, S.D. = 0.55) 2), interpersonal relations aspect (x ̅ = 3.53, S.D. = 0.56) 3), spiritual growth aspect ( = 3.52, S.D. = 0.58) and health responsibility aspect (x ̅ = 3.50, S.D. = 0.65). The high level of health promotion behavior sorted from high to low average scores were stress management aspect ( x ̅ = 3.25, S.D. = 0.69) and physical activity aspect ( x ̅ = 3.08, S.D. = 1.18).

          This research finding provided the basic information for health care provider to find ways to promote the elderly heath behavior. Even though, the research result showed that the overall health behavior of the elderly was at very high level, considered each aspect, the health care provider should be aware of health behavior promotion in regular and proper exercise.
