Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to study the factors affecting self–care behaviors of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients in the sub–district health promoting hospital under the responsibility of Phang Khon hospital, Sakon Nakhon province. Data were collected from 385 patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus which were drawn by simple sampling method through drawing lots. The questionnaires consisted of 4 parts including 1) general characteristics 2) knowledge about Diabetes Mellitus 3) perceptions of risk and severity of Diabetes Mellitus and 4) self–care behaviors of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients. Data were analyzed by the descriptive statistic, Chi–square test and multiple linear regressions. The p–value less than 0.05 were considered significant.

The Chi–square test showed that age, marital status, period of diabetes and blood glucose level were significantly associated with the self–care behaviors of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients (p = 0.041, 0.025, 0.026 and 0.015, respectively). The multiple linear regressions analysis showed that the factors affecting self–care behaviors of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients were age, occupation, blood glucose level and diabetes knowledge (R = 0.569, R2 = 0.327, F = 14.98, p < 0.05). The factor that had the greatest effect was age (Beta = –2.05) and the second most effect were occupation (Beta = 0.354), diabetes knowledge (Beta = 0.181) and blood sugar level (Beta = 0.140), respectively. In conclusion, the results could be used as a guideline for caring type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Patient care must take into account the individual characteristics of patient, especially age, occupations, diabetes khowledge and the control of blood sugar level and the control of blood sugar level. The advice should be tailored to each patient for correct and appropriate self–care behaviors, as a result, improve their quality of life.
