The Effect of Using the Newborn Jaundice Pocket Book and the Newborn Jaundice Application on Knowledge and Behaviors of Caregivers of Newborns Who had Jaundice upon Discharged from the Hospital
Abstract
This quasi–experimental research was to compare the knowledge and behavior scores of caregivers of newborns who had jaundice upon discharged from the hospital between those who received knowledge and behavior promotion through the Newborn Jaundice pocket book and the Newborn Jaundice application. The sample group were caregivers of newborns who had jaundice upon discharged from Nakhon Phanom hospital. A total of 30 cases were divided into 2 groups, 15 cases per each group. The tool used to collect data was the knowledge assessment form and care behavior assessment form for newborns with jaundice discharged from the hospital. The knowledge and behavior scores were compared between groups using the independent t–test.
The results showed that after the experiment, 1) the mean knowledge scores of both groups had increased to a high level. In the group using the Newborn Jaundice application, the average increase was at a high level (mean = 9.87, S.D. = 0.34). Most of the groups receiving knowledge promotion from the Newborn Jaundice knowledge booklet were slightly less (mean = 8.27, S.D. = 0.44). The two groups were compared by using independent t–test statistics. It was found that the knowledge scores (p = 0.063) were not different. 2) The average behavioral score of the group using the pocketbook had a moderate increase in the mean behavior score (mean = 14.47, S.D. = 0.98), while the group using the application had a high mean increase in the behavioral score. (mean = 19.00, S.D. = 1.34) and when the mean scores of the two groups were compared by using the independent t–test, it was found that the difference was statistically significant at 0.05 (p = 0.006). Therefore using the Newborn Jaundice pocket book and the Newborn Jaundice application help to raise caregiver knowledge at the same level but the behavior using the Newborn Jaundice application can promote caregiver behavior better than using the Newborn Jaundice pocket book.
