The effects of the ability development program and social support on smoking prevention of the youth groups in Ban-yang sub-district, Muang district, Buriram province. ผลของโปรแกรมการพัฒนาศักยภาพร่วมกับแรงสนับสนุนทางสังคมเพื่อป้องกัน การสูบบุหรี่ในกลุ่มเยาวชน ตำบลบ้านยาง อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดบุรีรัมย์
Abstract
This study was quasi-experimental research. The purpose of this research was to study the effects of the ability development program and social support for smoking prevention of the youth groups in ban yang sub-district, Muang district, Buriram province. The twenty-eight samples were selected by using purposive sampling and divided equally into two groups; experimental group and control group. The experimental group participated in the abilities development program and the social support once a week for 6 weeks, approximately 1.5 to 2.0 hours each time. The activities were participatory lectures, group discussions, games, multimedia learning, role playing, brainstorming and home visiting. The ability of control group was developed as usual. The questionnaires were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The differences within groups for the before-after design were tested using the paired samples t-test and Wilcoxon matched pairs signed ranks test. The differences between groups were tested using the independent sample t-test and Mann-Whitney U test. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered significant.
The results revealed that : the mean scores of smoking knowledge, attitude, decision making skills, problem solving skills and the intention to prevent smoking in the experimental group after participated in the program were significantly higher than those before participation (p< 0.05). The mean score of smoking knowledge, attitude, decision making skills, problem solving skills and the intention to prevent smoking in the experimental group were significantly higher than in those of control (p< 0.05).
