Abstract

ABSTRACT

Periodontitis is a cause of teeth loss especially in elderly people which 30% of them has teeth loss from this disease. Therefore, periodontitis prevention is teeth loss prevention as well. This quasi-experimental research was aimed to study the effect of dental health education program by applying the Protection Motivation Theory together with social support for periodontitis prevention among elderly people aged 60-74 years in Nonkhong sub-district, Banfang district, Khon Kaen Province. The study samples were 60 elderly people divided into experimental and comparison group equally. The duration of implementation was 12 weeks. The activities comprised of lecturing, demonstration, training, home visit, and relatives and neighbors support for oral health care. Data were collected by questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics; frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation and inferential statistics; Paired and Independent Sample t-test, ANCOVA. The significant level of 0.05 was used.

The results found that after the experiment, the mean scores of knowledge, threat appraisal (perception of severity and risk of periodontal disease), problem coping appraisal (perception of self-efficacy and response to self-efficacy in periodontitis prevention) and self-practice for periodontitis prevention in experimental group were significantly higher than those before experiment and comparison group (p < 0.05). Dental plaque and periodontal status of experimental group were significantly lower than those before experimental and comparison group (p < 0.05).

The Protection Motivation Theory for disease prevention together with social support should be applied in behavior modification to prevent other diseases, such as chronic diseases and obesity in other population.
