Abstract

          Acute bacterial meningitis is a life-threatening condition. It is an emergency illness with a high mortality rate. This study aimed to investigate the significant clinical manifestations, number of cases and survival rate as well as the situation of microorganism meningitis in patients admitted in Sakon Nakhon Hospital from year 2012 to 2016. The study design was the retrospective descriptive study. Data were collected using clinical record forms and analyzed by descriptive statistics such; percentage, mean and standard deviation. The result showed that, there were 80 microorganism meningitis patients in Sakon Nakhon hospital. Male were 57.5 %, average age was 37 years and hospitalization was 5.5 days. The clinical manifestations were fever (98.8 %), headache (97.5 %), altered consciousness (76.3 %), Nuchal stiffness (61.3 %), diarrhea (72.5 %), ecchymosis (67.5 %). Major complications were disseminated intravascular coagulation (92.5 %), acute respiratory distress syndrome (97.5 %) and hearing loss (86.3%). The underlying medical conditions were alcohol abuse (56.3 %) and chronic liver cirrhosis (38.8 %). Majority of causative bacterial were Streptococus.pneumoniae (11.25%) and Haemophilus influenzae (8.75%). Therefore, these data could be applied in epidemiology as a surveillance plan for patien.
