Factors Associated with Road Traffic Accidents among Commercial Motorcycle Drivers in Lam Pho Subdistrict, Bang Bua Thong District, Nonthaburi Province

Abstract

            Road traffic accidents among commercial motorcycle riders represent a major occupational health and safety problem, as these workers are continuously exposed to on-road risks while working. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of road traffic accidents among commercial motorcycle riders in Lam Pho Subdistrict, Bang Bua Thong District, Nonthaburi Province. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 233 participants using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression with a Backward LR variable-selection procedure, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05.

            The results showed that most participants were male (82.4%), with a mean age of 38.4 ± 7.2 years. Alcohol consumers accounted for 62.2%, and 73.8% worked more than 8 hours per day. The prevalence of having experienced a road traffic accident within the past 12 months was 33.0%. In the final model, alcohol consumption (Adjusted OR 2.34, 95% CI: 1.27, 4.32) and working more than 8 hours per day (Adjusted OR 2.37, 95% CI: 1.16, 4.84) were significantly associated with having experienced a road traffic accident. The model showed poor discriminative ability (AUC = 0.635). The Population Attributable Fraction indicated that eliminating alcohol consumption and controlling working hours simultaneously could potentially prevent up to 70.9% of accidents in this population.

            These findings indicate that alcohol consumption and prolonged working hours are modifiable risk factors with substantial potential to reduce road traffic accidents among commercial motorcycle riders. Relevant agencies should prioritize interventions to reduce alcohol-related risk behaviors and promote appropriate working-hour limits among this informal worker population.
