Effect of Structured Informational Program and Maternal Involvement in Maternal Role Practices in Caring of Term Newborn with Phototherapy, Bang Bua Tong hospital, Nonthaburi

Abstract

         The quasi–experimental research aimed to study the effect of the structured informational program and maternal involvement in maternal role practices in caring of term newborn with phototherapy at Bang Bua Tong hospital, Nonthaburi. Forty mothers who took care of term newborn with jaundice and received phototherapy were enrolled. The purposive sampling was applied to obtain 2 sample groups; control and experiment groups. Each group consisted of 20 samples. The research was conducted from August 1st to November 31st, 2020. The research tools included 1) experimental tool, the structured informational program and maternal involvement in maternal role practices in caring of term newborn with phototherapy and 2) data collection tools, the questionnaires for maternal role practices in caring of term newborn with jaundice and received phototherapy which was reviewed for content validity by 3 experts. The reliability tested by the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient method was 0.77. Data were analyzed using the frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation. The relationships were tested usingindependent t– test and paired sample t–test.

            The results showed that after this program was introduced, the experiment group had significantly higher mean score of maternal role practice than that before program introduction ( = 76.40, S.D. = 5.39 vs = 68.15, S.D. = 2.03, p < 0.01) and significantly higher than that of control group ( = 68.05, S.D. = 1.64, p < 0.05). While the control group had no different mean scores of maternal role practices before and after usual instruction ( = 67.09, S.D. = 1.74 vs = 68.05, S.D. = 1.64, p = 0.08). Findings showed that this program could improve the maternal role practices in caring of term newborn with phototherapy.
