ABSTRACT
The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to study the effects of a self-management promotion program on the oral care behavior and oral mucositis of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy based on the self-management ideas of Kanfer and Gaelick-Buys The studied subjects consisted of 50 cancer patients receiving 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin as a chemotherapy protocol in the chemotherapy unit at Chulabhorn Hospital. They were randomized purposively and assigned into control and experimental group. The data were collected between March and May, 2017. The research instruments consisted of the following: 1) self-management promotion program 2) monitoring form 3) demographic questionnaire 4) oral care behavior form 5) oral examination form and 6) oral mucositis form. Data were analyzed using the descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon signed ranks test.
The findings indicated that, after receiving the self-management promotion program for 8 weeks, the mean score of totally oral care behavior of the experimental group significantly increased and was higher than that of control group (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, respectively). Furthermore, the mean score of oral mucositis in the experimental group was significantly lower than that of control group (p < 0.001).
This study showed that the self-management promotion program could enhance the oral care behavior and reduce the oral mucositis among cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.
